“Misión Tango Surf” demonstrates a good command of both surf guitar and the tango, a social dance known for its competitiveness and eroticism. Tango rhythms and time signatures are very much on display here, played within the context of twangy guitar instrumentals with more than a little hint of surf music. Furthermore, each track was recorded with different backing bands, which include one of Brazil’s most popular instrumental outfits, The Dead Rocks, and (of course) a track with Danny “Daddy-O Grande” Amis (the standard Mexican folk song, “Cielito Lindo”) who made Mexico his home base a couple of years ago. Other Central and South American bands include Los Protones, The Pulltones, Tango Surf Combo, Sindicato Tango Surf (with “Chica Surf,” a cover of “Surfer Girl”), Los Kaníbales Surf Combo (“Terremoto Stomp” with its reverb crashes), and more.

The Volcanics, one of Southern California's top surf n' stomp combos, is back with their third full-length release! This disc is a tribute to the place they've called home as a band since the beginning, hitting the garage where they first picked up their instruments and have recorded all three of their albums, and delivering a set of tunes (all written by the band, with help and inspiration from friends and past band members), that goes right back to the roots of surf music. Lots of reverb, twang and crashing, pounding rhythms can be found on this disc, which has a few vocals, but is mostly instrumental surf.
